EVERYONE KNOWS ROCK DOVES (Columba livia) AS THE
common pigeons familiar to city streets, squares, and parks all
over the world. The name kolumbas is derived from Greek for
“a diver” because of its swimming motion while in flight, and
livia from Latin for livor, meaning “bluish.” Rock doves
are the wild ancestors of all common domestic pigeons
(Columba livia domestica) and all the fancy
pigeons that have been bred in hundreds of
shapes and colors.
