THE FATEFUL DAY WAS MARCH 16, 1890, IN CENTRAL PARK, NEW York City. Sixty European starlings were released by a wealthy New York drug manufacturer Eugene Schieffelin. He was enchanted of all things Shakespearean and was curiously intent on introducing all the birds mentioned in Shakespeare.
