
FOUND VIRTUALLY EVERYWHERE IN
the northern hemisphere, the common mallard
(Anas platyrhynchos - platy Greek meaning broad
or flat, and rhyncos for beak) is far and away the
best-known and the most abundant of all waterfowl
species. Were it not for the fact that they are so familiar,
the handsome drakes would probably rate as the most eyecatching
of all waterfowl.
