Taxonomically, pheasants belong to the order Galliformes, in the family Phasianidae, a chicken-like group of birds comprised of four distinct subfamilies: pheasants and partridges (Phasianinae), turkeys (Meleagridinae), grouse (Tetraoninae), and guineafowl (Numidinae). The Galliformes group has become unrivaled among birds in its impact upon man. Due to the comparatively large size and grounddwelling nature of the birds, they make an easy-to-obtain meal and upon being captured, they lay large nutritious eggs as well.
